I will do it later...

One of the most difficult things to do as a student is to not procrastinate. Let’s be honest, we all have done this at least once in our lifetime and it’s natural to feel that way from time to time. However, it becomes a problem when it happens frequently, deterring us from doing the projects we’re supposed to do or the exams we’re supposed to study for. Unfortunately, there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” solution where you get rid of your procrastination on the spot; procrastination takes time to be fixed, but with some time and some good habits, you will gain full control over it.

The Procrastination Equation

Did you know there’s actually an equation for productivity? Here it is: productivity= intention+attention. “Intention” is your intent to accomplish a certain goal and “attention” is how much time and energy you devote to the task. If you have one half of the equation but not the other, it means that you’re still not being productive. Keeping this equation in mind, let’s talk about what to do when you first start a task. To use as an example, suppose you’re trying to finish a project, try to follow these steps:

    1. First, break down your project into bite-sized tasks where you know it will be easy to accomplish in one day.
    2. Next, you would want to create some sort of schedule to follow and assign those bite-sized tasks to each day in your schedule. This will help create a routine/habit for you to stick to and soon, you would start doing it everyday without thinking about it.
    3. Like always, you would want to clear any distractions such as your phone and the gazillion notifications you receive everyday. This should be a rule of thumb whenever you’re trying to complete something important.

DON'T LET YOUR MIND FOOL YOU!

Having the right mindset is an important thing to have when trying not to procrastinate. No matter what other people might say, procrastination is bad for you, not good. You need to get rid of the belief that procrastination is a good thing and you need to deal with the fact that some work just isn't fun. Also, if you procrastinated recently and you feel bad for doing so, you need to forgive yourself first and foremost. Otherwise, you might spiral down thinking it’s a grave crime when in reality, it was just a natural thing we all do from time to time. Finally, always remember to have a goal whenever you’re doing something and constantly remind yourself of the importance of accomplishing it.
